Longreach Showgirl, Claire Jackson, was the successful finalist at the 2017 Central and North West Sub Chamber in Winton on Saturday evening, and will now go on to compete at the Ekka Showgirl finals in August.
A governess at Trinidad Station, north west of Quilpie, Ms Jackson entered in the competition as a way of meeting people in the area.
“I entered in the showgirl competition previously at my hometown, Bell, in 2015 and had a wonderful experience. It was a wonderful way to get back into the community and meet people, so I wanted to redo that experience out here,” she said.
“As I am new out here it was a great way to get involved in the community and try something new.”
Ms Jackson competed against two other showgirls from Cloncurry and Winton; where the Cloncurry Showgirl Raquelle Vieira placed Runner Up.
“We were judged on our politics, knowledge of sub chamber, benefit of shows and agriculture and industry knowledge,” Ms Jackson said.
“I have always had a passion for agriculture as I grew up on a Simmental cattle stud. I then moved here and have been working as a governess for the last 12 months and feel this is where I belong. I love the lifestyle and can’t see myself leaving.”
Ms Jackson said this made the perfect opportunity to get involved with the Longreach Show Society.
“I think the future of our country shows really rely on the committee and our drive to encourage younger people to become involved.
“So I am excited to be working with the Longreach Show Society in the coming years to build a bigger and better show.
“This year we have the first Rural Ambassador for our area and the only one from our sub chamber, so hopefully that will also encourage youth to be part of our show.”
