The Julia Creek Combined Sporting Association (CSA) and the McKinlay Shire Council have worked hard over the last two years to secure a match of this calibre in the town.
CSA President Calem Fegan said everyone was excited to see good quality footy played on their doorstep.
“How great is it that the Intrust Super Cup is going to be in Julia Creek?” Fegan said.
“The Queensland Rugby League Country Week concept is a fantastic initiative that gives those of us who live in rural and remote centres the opportunity to watch high level football live, without having to travel to major centres such as Townsville and Cairns.”
Julia Creek will play host to the battle of the birds tomorrow, with the South Logan Magpies taking on the Tweed Heads Seagulls.
Fegan said it has been a huge effort by a large team to ensure the game would go ahead in Julia Creek.
“McKinlay Shire Council have been fantastic, they have ensured the major upgrades to the amenities at the oval were finished in time for the match, as well as the planned renovations of the building, and have the oval in tip top shape,” Fegan said.
“The CSA committee and volunteers have also been working tirelessly to get the match off the ground and will be a great event for all to come and enjoy.”
Along with the Intrust Super Cup match, there will be a celebration of women in rugby league, in line with the National Rugby League’s Women in League round.
“The local ladies have been coming down to touch football and Oztag each week and will be playing a Leaguetag game to kick the day off,” Fegan said.
“It will be a good match, while they may just be playing for a bit of fun, I think it will get a bit more serious when they run over that white line.”
And country footy isn’t country footy without a bit of rivalry. The Julia Creek Saints will take on the Richmond Tigers in the 2017 Shire Showdown to finish the day off.
“Both Julia Creek and Richmond want to take home bragging rights,” Fegan said.
“I mean, the Shire Showdown is the last game of the day, the boys have to live up to that pressure - the crowd might be surprised how hard the boys go.
“No one wants to lose, that’s for sure.”
