Dear Editor
People in the Central Highlands and throughout Queensland are rightly appalled at the light sentence handed out in the case of a Blackwater man who was convicted in Emerald Magistrates Court this month of using a puppy for sexual purposes...
The sentence, a fine of $500 and a ban on having dogs for two years, in no way reflects the severity of the abuse proven in this case.
Penalties for cases of cruelty and neglect are quite inadequate, and even so are rarely imposed to the full extent of the law – under the Queensland Animal Care and Protection Act, animal cruelty can result in fines of $235,000 or imprisonment for up to seven years. At the very least, cases of abuse should lead to a lifetime ban on the offender having animals.
In a study by research team Jory, Flemming, and Burton, 96 percent of juvenile offenders interviewed who had engaged in sex with non-human animals also admitted to sexual offences against humans, providing further evidence of the need to prosecute and rehabilitate people who sexually assault animals.
Cruelty to animals is a serious crime that must be taken seriously. If you suspect someone of abusing an animal, report it to authorities right away for the safety of the entire community.
Sincerely,
Ashley Fruno, Associate Director

We repeat some of the Facebook comments about the results of our online poll thus far about Sunday trading. As of Saturday 77 per cent of voters supported allowing Mount Isa’s Coles and Woolworths to trade that day.
Lulu Tee: Mr Katter needs to represent the entire community, not a few vocal lobbyists within our community.
Gary Osman, Mount Isa: Very, very interesting, is it not? Do you not think the big boys just may have something to do with this poll?
Talking to people in (the) street these ratio of figures presented certainly does not reflect street talk.
(I would) love to see Chamber of Commerce run an open forum public meeting on the issue, not a stage managed forum like the election stunt. That won’t happen. Let’s not be influenced by a media poll.
Debbie Smith, Mount Isa: Looks like the town wants to move forward. I haven't spoken to anyone who doesn't want Sunday trading. Especially with the tourist season.
Sara Jane, Mount Isa: What a joke, not all votes were even from Australia let alone Mt Isa residents! I for one am against the move. As for 'moving forward' go to WA, you are lucky to have a coffee shop open on a Sunday.
Carol Stevenson, Normanton: Don’t do it, it’s too hard to have a life. We currently do seven days and we don’t get to have a life.
Some of the social media reaction to Danielle Slade chosen by ALP to run for Traeger:
Philip Garland: I know one thing for sure - she'll get things done. Well done Labor, you've picked a fighter there.
Carolyn Shillabeer: Sooo behind you and love the article, so true and comes from heart.
Sandra Fulham: I was impressed when I read Danielle's letter to the editor some days ago. I wish her every success.
Gabriele Darby Jones: Good on you Danielle. It would be great to see some positive changes for the Isa.
