Mayor Greg Campbell said the council was negotiating with the Department of Communities to make the position full-time. It was yet uncertain which agency the engagement officer would work for.
“We’ve got a fantastic PCYC that’s actively working that sphere all the time and I see that position in being able to support them and drawing other agencies together.”
“What I am looking for is more than just youth employment. It is youth engagement as well so that encompasses employment,” Cr Campbell said.
“A young person that gets a job while still at school, it gives them a great foundation for life.
“We’re looking more at the kids disengaging from school.”
Cr Campbell confirmed there were disengaged youth in Cloncurry, but he said it was a small number.
“But definitely a number I believe we can make a difference with,” the mayor said.
Mount Isa MP Rob Katter first referred to the youth engagement officer position being proposed early in June when responding to concerns of high unemployment rates in western Queensland’s youth.
