Police say it could be a while before we know the full details of Wednesday’s fatal car crash north of Gregory which claimed three lives due to its remote ocation and the fact the Coroner was involved in a “major investigation”.
Mount Isa Acting Police Inspector Chris Hodgmann said police were called to the crash on the Wills Development Rd about 40km Gregory around 6.20am Wednesday.
“A motor vehicle was located after being involved in a single vehicle accident,” Acting Inspector Hodgmann said.
“There appears to be three occupants in the vehicle deceased but we don’t want to identify anyone at this stage until all the next of kin have been advised.”
He said the Coroner was now investigating and had not released any details about those involved however he did say they were from the Gregory and Doomadgee area.
“We’re still examining the scene, we have some crash experts there to try and discover the cause,” he said.
“We are unsure if alcohol or speed or any of the Fatal Five were involved at this stage, it’s too early to tell.”
Acting Inspector Hodgmann confirmed a seven-year-old girl survived the crash with minor injuries and was now in a stable condition and reunited with her mother in Mount Isa Hospital though he could not say how she survived.
He said the investigation could take “up to six months” before a report is provided to the coroner.
The Wills Development Road is now re-opened.
