Michael Kitzelmann joined the council in January 2017 from Etheridge Shire Council to replace former CEO Emilio Ciannetti who stepped down to take over the director of engineering role.
Mr Kitzelmann was mandated to lead MICC’s ongoing economic development.
However the North West Star had heard unconfirmed rumours in the last week that he would not continue past his six month probation period, rumours which were confirmed today.
MICC released a statement late Wednesday to say the council has chosen not to continue Mr Kitzelmann’s appointment “in accordance with the terms of his contract”.
“He will leave the council today (Wednesday),” the statement read.
Mr Kitzelmann had appeared in his usual spot at the council budget earlier in the day and also attended the media briefing from mayor, councillors and senior staff immediately afterwards.
Mount Isa Mayor Joyce McCulloch thanked Mr Kitzelmann for his work.
“On behalf of the council I thank Michael for his work as CEO over the past six months in the service of the city,” Cr McCulloch said.
Cr McCulloch said the council will begin the process as soon as possible to find the best possible candidate for the CEO position.
“Enacting the budget and delivering the Economic Development Strategy is of vital importance to the future of our community,” she said.
“We will be focused on recruiting an individual with strong leadership skills and a record of innovation and a proven capability in economic development.”
Council’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Sharon Ibardolaza will act as CEO until a new appointment is made.
Mr Kitzelmann said he was seeking legal advice and would make no further comment.
