Three contestants in the local heat on Saturday would win a trip to the national final in Cairns and yet the competition was struggling to supply that number.
On The North West Star website there were no shortages of names proposed for the competition. There were also several Zoolander references - a comedy starring Ben Stiller about a male model.
Distribution linesman Dale Maher, 22, believed there might be hesitation from people to enter because there were other main events such as Quamby Rodeo happening the same weekend.
“Plus the biggest thing that kind of made me hesitate was being ‘stage ready’ to walk on stage with a pair of speedos on,” Mr Maher said.
“And if people are asking ‘why do it?’ Why not? It’s going to be fun either way you look at it.
“I’ve been backstage with female competitors for bikini comps and just the laughs and thrill they get of being on stage definitely helped me enjoy my nights there.”
