Jess has been out of competitive athletics for about five years and was a little nervous about her return. Her nerves were unwarranted as she ran a convincing 1m 09.2s to take the record with very little training and she is even matching it with the boys on the track.
Jess and club coach Ken Dickson have already struck up a friendly rivalry in the 100m with the current head to head score at one each.
“It’s great to have someone in the club the same speed as myself because it doesn’t let you slack off.” Dickson said.
“I haven’t had a girl beat me in the 100m out here since Cat Hannell was with us back in 2013. Jess caught me a bit my surprise when she got me at the start and I couldn’t reel her in; the roles were reversed last week and I got the better start and she had the same problem as I did the week before, even our times were reversed from the previous week.”
Personal bests (PBs) were a little harder to come by last Saturday possibly due to the workload of the Schools District Championships the days prior. No one managed the perfect five from five but 17-year-old Dan Butler backed up from his five from five two club days ago to record four from five last week.
Legend Certificate qualifiers were flowing strong and fast with 12 more athletes sharing in 16 certificates. Five-year-old Ethan English secured two more in 100m and Discus leaving him with one last one needed for Shot Put for him to be awarded the prestigious ‘Total Legend’ trophy for passing all the qualifiers available to him.
The other athletes to receive certificates will be Caelan Howard, Cooper Hanson, Corey Stewart, Jacob Parsons, Kadea O’Donnell, Kailan Turner, Lewis McCoy, Macklin Kretschmann, Tia Peel, Xavier McIntosh and Zeb Kretschmann.
Declan Haylock’s enthusiastic long jumping will see him receive this week’s ‘Mighty Minion’ Award
