Tony Jones was aged 20 when he disappeared on the outskirts of Townsville in north Queensland on November 3, 1982. 

His body has never been found and although there have been many suspects over the years, no charges have ever been laid over his suspected murder.

The last confirmed sighting of Tony was at a phone box in the Townsville suburb of Rosslea when he phoned his family and girlfriend.

An inquest in 2002 ruled he was the victim of foul play.

A new inquest into his disappearance began last year. It resumed again in Townsville on Monday and is expected to run for at least two weeks.

Several persons of interest in the case are expected to take the stand and testify.

On Monday, police officers who have worked on the case gave evidence.

The mystery of the missing WA man was the subject of a 60 Minutes program in October last year, airing detailed new information about an outback slaughterhouse in Hughenden and how it had become a new place of interest for investigators.

Mark Jones, Tony's brother, said on Monday that he and his family were still hopeful the inquest could answer some questions.

"We are hoping for progress," he said.

"Ideally, we would like the case sent off to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) for him to take up the battle.

"We just need people to understand where it is at.

"The other battle we will be doing in the next fortnight, is to convince the coroner and the police that they need to excavate the slaughter yards in Hughenden."

A $250,000 reward was posted by the Queensland Government in 2010.

Senior Sergeant John Mahony was one of the police officers who gave evidence yesterday.

In 2014, as part of a fresh public appeal into the case, he said: "The people who know what happened to Tony in November of 1982 are 30 years older, their circumstances have changed and I urge them to come forward, to do the right thing by the Jones family, and by Tony."
