Andy Constantinou started work at Mica Creek Power Station in 1972, transferring from Mount Isa Mines where he began his electrical apprenticeship in December 1969.
After helping to commission the newly constructed number three and four generating units at Mica Creek Power Station, Andy did a brief stint back at MIM to commission a copper concentrator, before returning to Mica Creek where he has worked since.
In his time at Mica Creek Power Station, Andy worked in maintenance, operations and management positions.
As the energy needs of North West Queensland increased, so did the need for additional generating units, and Andy was heavily involved in the commissioning of eight new generating units installed at the power station.
Andy also played an important role in the project to convert Mica Creek Power Station to natural gas firing in 1998 following construction of the Carpentaria Gas Pipeline.
Andy’s most recent position at Mica Creek Power Station was Principal Advisor for Operational Improvements and Projects.
Manager of Mica Creek Power Station Paul Smith said Andy had made a significant contribution over the years.
“Andy has devoted 47 years of his working life to the station to ensure a reliable supply of electricity to industry and residential customers in North West Queensland,” Mr Smith said. “He is passionate about wanting to pass on his immense knowledge to the operations, maintenance and engineering teams.”
Andy said he had faced many challenges in his time at Mica Creek Power Station and had always strived to meet expectations while helping others along the way.
“In our North West region, system knowledge and quick and correct actions have always been needed to keep the lights on,” Andy said.
“I’ve always made myself available to restore power supply as quickly as possible, and I’m proud of my contribution to the North West power system.
