Selwood finished on the bench with an ankle injury after the resurgent Swans inflicted a rare but telling Geelong defeat at Simonds Stadium on Friday night.

On Saturday, Selwood, who was on crutches, said he would have scans. "It's sore, just as we probably thought it would be," he told Channel Nine.

Hawkins, however, could be cited for a jumper punch on Dane Rampe's chin while Mitch Duncan was caught up in an incident with Papley, who won a free kick against Duncan at a crucial juncture in the final quarter, prompting accusations of staging by the Sydney player.

Papley won a free kick against the Geelong midfielder and booted a goal early in the final quarter of the Swans' 46-point win, adding to a night of frustration for the Cats.

Former North Melbourne premiership star David King says the AFL must crack down on staging in wake of the incident involving Papley and Duncan.

Geelong coach Chris Scott said he believed the umpire who awarded the free kick to Papley would be "disappointed" with his call. In terms of the contact, the umpire was heard to say on field that "there was no need for it".

Already with an injury list featuring Steven Motlop and Daniel Menzel, they now have the worry of being without Hawkins, whose jumper punch connected with Rampe's chin in the second term. He wasn't reported but the incident will be scrutinised by the MRP.

While the force was minimal, Hawkins' poor record won't help him. He was suspended for jumper-punching Adelaide's Matt Crouch in round 11, while he was also forced to the sidelines for one match last season for a similar incident involving Greater Western Sydney captain Phil Davis.

Former Geelong captain Cameron Ling said during Channel Seven's commentary that Hawkins needed to stamp this out of his game. "He cannot be missing games in the lead up to finals, Tom Hawkins," Ling said.

The AFL made it clear earlier this year it would no longer tolerate jumper punches.

"I reckon 'Hawk' is in trouble," Ling said.

Geelong coach Chris Scott said he was confident star midfielder Selwood would play on Saturday. Selwood finished the match on the bench, having hurt his ankle after landing on the foot of teammate Zac Smith in the shadows of half-time.

"I am confident enough to say now that he will be fine ??? we sit here pretty confident that he'll be OK," Scott said.

Selwood was confident that his injury wasn't serious.

???"We'll have some scans and see how it comes up. The second one I probably felt a little bit more, I tried to get out for the early bit of the last quarter and just couldn't get it going so I decided to call it a night."

The Papley incident came straight after Dan Hannebery had booted the first goal of the term. Papley's goal - he also received a 50-metre penalty after a Cat encroached into the 10-metre protected area - stretched the Swans lead to 37 points.

Asked if he thought the free kick was legitimate, Scott made his thoughts clear.

"I have looked at it, and you're allowed to have an opinion on these things," Scott said.

"I think that if the umpire who paid it has a look at the vision I looked at, I think he'd be disappointed that he paid it. But that's OK, mistakes happen. The more accurate question and the one we're more focused on is: Why did Mitch [Duncan] do it in the first place?" he said.

Scott then asked a journalist if he thought the decision was wrong. The journalist said it was, to which Scott replied: "Yeah, OK. They didn't go to ground the same way in the contest did they? They were a bit stronger around the ball. I don't want to get into a dialogue about one incident that cost us a goal when we lost by plenty. Clearly we had a chance at three-quarter time and we just handed our chance back to them.

"I'm not going to sit here and say: 'If only mistakes weren't made by the umpires then we would have won the game'. Mistakes were made by our players. If there was a subsequent mistake by the umpires, their coaches will pick it up on Monday when they finally get to work."

King said on Saturday the league needed to stamp out staging, and added that Tigers' defender Alex Rance was one man umpires and the match review panel had to keep an eye on.

"We need to do something about the diving," he said on SEN.

When Rance was mentioned, King replied: "Rance has got an issue. Maybe we don't go after every player the same, and that's the MRP's job."

The Cats, who will regain match-winner Patrick Dangerfield from suspension this week, face a potentially rugged run into the finals, for they have the Tigers, Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney to come.

Scott said the Swans took their chances and suggested that the Cats had been wasteful and were exploited for their lack of depth, prompting questions on Saturday as to whether they were a legitimate premiership threat and had a game plan that would stand up in September.

In a performance reminiscent of last year's preliminary final, the Swans blitzed the Cats early, enjoying a 32-point lead by the first break. John Longmire's team has now won 11 of its past 13 games and look capable of going deep into September after starting the season with six defeats in a row.
