It is called the Tech Savvy Seniors Queensland program and the program is funded by Telstra and the Queensland Government through the State Library of Queensland and Department of Communities.
The program enables older people, particularly those in regional and remote areas of Queensland the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence to use technology for socialising, accessing important services or conducting personal business.
The Program aims to help seniors to get connected and participate in the online world, with the objective of increasing digital inclusion, helping reduce social isolation, increasing access to government information and services via the internet, and improving awareness and resilience to online fraud and financial abuse.
Cr Jean Ferris said the first Tech Savvy Seniors workshop this Saturday, August 19 starting at 9.30am, will introduce seniors to the basics of operating a computer.
“There are many older members of our community who may not have used a computer or even fear them,” Cr Ferris said.
“This first workshop is about showing people computers aren’t terrifying and can in fact be very useful for a whole range of things from finding information to shopping and staying in touch with the grandchildren.”
Cr Ferris said workshops will be held regularly every week through to June next year.
“Each session is designed to be fun and demystify the technology that many of us take for granted,” she said.
“Seniors can sign up to learn how to use the internet, explore social media, how to email, shop, bank and pay bills online and use devices such as tablets and smart phones.”
Cr Ferris said technology was a great tool for keeping in touch with family and friends, accessing services and learning about the world. “I encourage anyone like me who is interested in building their technology skills, to sign up and take advantage of these free workshops,” she said.
