The Mount Isa club travels to Townsville this weekend to compete in the Regional Championships, only two weeks after returning from the Hughenden Gymnastics Competition where 27 club gymnasts from the club competed.
The club said the Hughenden competition offered an amazing opportunity for the kids to gain exposure to competition conditions and to prepare for regionals.
“The gymnasts have worked extremely hard to prepare for competition season and their results from Hughenden competition were outstanding,” Kylie Brooke, club manager said.
“Competitors ranged from 3-18 years both boys and girls.”
Ms Brooke said regionals this weekend in Townsville was a stepping stone to the State Championships to be held in Brisbane in September.
“North West Gymnastics has 4 girls who have already qualified for State Championships in Brisbane later this year,” she said.
“It is a busy time for us as a club with training and travel for competitions.
Ms Brooke thanked North West Gymnastics helpers.
“Without the commitment and support of our gym families, coaches and supporters we would never have achieved these amazing results,” she said.
“Good luck to all competitors at Regionals this weekend.”
The event — at Gymnastics Townsville August 19-20 — is a stepping stone for local athletes to qualify for the state championships in Brisbane in September.
Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said participating gymnasts would demonstrate their strength, flexibility and artistry throughout the two-day event.
“Competitors have been practicing routines for months in preparation for this event, and I’m confident we’ll see some really polished and inspiring performances,” Ms Dowdell said.
“Five clubs are set to participate, with gymnasts competing on men’s apparatus such as the vault, rings, parallel bars, horizontal bars and pommel horse, and women's apparatus.”
Ms Dowdell said competitors from as young as six-years-old would take to the floor, highlighting the region’s local talent.
“While the focus is on having fun, there’s definitely a strong sense of healthy competition among our gymnasts and I have no doubt it will make for some great performances.”
