Gupte had hoped brother Anand would be included in the 27-strong squad, which was announced last week.

But the 20-year-old said he wanted to "prove a point for my family" when he gets his chance to impress as part of a group of talented rising stars.

"I was a little disappointed that my brother didn't make it," Gupte said.

"Previously we had made the under-18 futures squad together, and that was pretty special ... I definitely want to get out there and prove a point for my family."

The Wests youngster has been earmarked as a future Australian player and was the only ACT representative in the junior squad.

Gupte admitted he was surprised to be picked in the extended squad, and attributed his brother's non-selection to a below-par under-21 national championship.

The Hockey Australia squad is aimed at nurturing the next generation of Australian stars as they progress through the ranks.

Gupte, who studies paramedicine and nursing at the Australian Catholic University, believes his well-rounded arsenal of skills caught the attention of selectors.

"I think I cover a lot of areas," Gupte said.

"I'm good with passing ... I'm decent at a lot of things, like elimination, flicking. I'm very versatile. I can play a lot of positions."

Gupte, who can play inside forward and up front, did not make the cut for the 18-man team selected to defend its Sultan of Johor Cup in October.

But he said he would be champing at the bit for the Kookaburras' trip to Malaysia if he could secure a late call-up.

"If someone pulls out I might still make it," Gupte said.

"If I get the opportunity I will take it in a heartbeat. It would be a really good opportunity to develop and represent Australia."
