"It is one of the issues being considered now," Dr Miles said.

"I have asked for advice from my department on having an interim moratorium and a longer-term moratorium."

Ipswich was "renamed" Australia's dump capital after the extent of household waste being driven and railed from New South Wales and dumped, primarily in Ipswich, to save money.

"I would also urge Ipswich City Council in their planning schemes that they could decline to approve future landfills," Dr Miles said.

Ipswich councillor and mayoral candidate Andrew Antoniolli, the council's planning and development committee chairman, said he backed the state government's investigation into interstate waste dumping in Queensland.

"There is no point in approving any new landfills, or considering any new applications until the existing operations are investigated," he said.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Dr Miles announced the three-month investigation into waste being trucked into Queensland from interstate on Tuesday night.

The Queensland investigation will examine:

• Incentives for movement of waste from other states and how to prevent this from occurring;
• Illegal practices and possible breaches of regulations;
• Need for regulatory reform; and
• The role of other states and the Commonwealth.

The NSW waste levy is $138 per tonne. Queensland has not had a waste levy since the Newman government was elected in 2012.

It meant southern waste companies were avoiding paying millions of dollars in fees each year by simply dumping waste in south-east Queensland.

Cr Antoniolli said, if elected mayor, he would order an internal investigation into how well waste companies were complying with council guidelines.

"It may well be that the conditions are dated in terms of the current science."

Interstate waste companies have been driving waste from interstate for at least five years, since the Liberal National government axed the previous Labor government's waste levy.

Other Ipswich mayoral candidates have also voiced concerns at the extent of waste coming from NSW, including a suggestion by acting mayor Paul Tully that Ipswich could impose its own waste levy

In 2012, it was estimated that one waste company alone was bringing 7000 trucks of waste each year to Queensland.

Politicians from both major parties ignored the problem until it was again revisited by the ABC's Four Corners program a fortnight ago and television cameras exposed the extent of the problems.

Meanwhile, One Nation clarified its position on the waste levy on Wednesday promising to ban NSW waste operators from bringing waste to Queensland.

State leader Steve Dickson said One Nation would ban the practice if the party gained the balance of power in the Queensland Parliament at the next state election.

"When we get into a balance of power situation, we will just direct them not to accept waste from NSW operators," Mr Dickson said.

"The Premier has to be kidding by pretending she wasn't aware of the extent of the dumping.

"She has known about the problem for at least seven years, but has done nothing about it.

"Both the ALP and LNP think the answer to every problem is to launch an inquiry. Well that is not good enough."
