Troy Cassar-Daley headlined a free concert, organised by Mount Isa Police against domestic violence and he thanked former Mount Isa superintendent (now Townsville) Kev Guteridge for making it happen.
“I met Kev at the Big Red Bash last year and he said wouldn’t it be great if you could play in Mount Isa in support of domestic violence,” Troy said.
“I thought it was a great idea and when I was going up to Burketown Friday for the (Frontier Days) festival I thought I could play here on the Thursday.”
And so it happened, supported on stage by his band and later in the night the local community choir MICE and earlier by the opening act the local emergency services band The Hoax.
They were rewarded by a big local crowd who came for a great night of entertainment which getting awareness of a serious message.
MCs Mick and Jay from Country World Music said they wanted to have a discussion about DV and promote the hashtag #realmenwearwhiteribbons.
"It’s important to talk about about and let others know how you feel about it,” they said. “The more you speak up the more we can get good results from just advising friends, family and colleagues that you don’t support it.”
PLO Uncle George Leon did the Welcome to Country and he welcome all Aboriginal and non-Aboriginals in support of this important cause.
“We march as one”, Uncle George said.
“This night is very important for all of us as we stand together as one against domestic violence.”
Statistics show domestic violence is a serious problem in Australia with a staggering one in three women saying they have experienced sexual violence against them by someone they know while one in five women have been stalked in their lifetime.
