Gungahlin rocked Canberra FC in a rehearsal for next week's minor semi-final and made a huge statement with a 1-0 win at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval on Sunday.

If they can replicate their feat next weekend the highly-fancied Canberra FC can kiss their season goodbye.

Canberra were an outside hope of stealing second spot from Belconnen United but needed to win by seven goals to lock up an important second chance in the finals.

Instead they finished fifth but will feature in the final four, because the second-placed FFA Centre of Excellence does not play finals as per its agreement with Capital Football.

It's a quirk the competition won't need to deal with next season following the FFA's decision to scrap the academy program, which former Socceroo Tony Vidmar believes will make Australian soccer suffer for the next decade.

Gungahlin leapfrogged Canberra into fourth as the visitors were denied time and time again by "oustanding" goalkeeper Jason Denham and failed to find an answer to Jack Green's 32nd minute goal.

Gungahlin coach Marcial Munoz believes his side have hit their straps at the right time of the year as they ride a four-game unbeaten streak into the finals.

"One hundred per cent we're the underdog. We're the smallest club out of all the clubs involved in the finals football," Munoz said.

"We definitely see ourselves as the underdog but we're going to do the best job possible to ensure that we are very competitive throughout.

"It may end next week, it may end the week after. You never know, we might go all the way. But we'll take it one game at a time so we don't get ahead of ourselves."

Munoz understands the minor semi-final is set to be played at a neutral venue, likely to be announced as Woden Park.

Belconnen coach Dean Ugrinic is brimming with confidence ahead of his side's major semi-final clash with Olympic despite a 2-0 loss to the FFA COE to round out the regular season.

"Certainly we're going to be more than competitive in the finals. I really do believe we've got a side this year that can go a long way in the competition," Ugrinic said.

"We were resting a few players. The Centre of Excellence don't have problems with yellow cards, red cards, and all these other issues that come with playing the last round of the regular season.

"Everyone will be back next week. All the red cards and other things that we were worried about all [resets]. We're going to be 100 per cent, back to our full strength side which will be good."

The Cooma Tigers finished their season on a high as Nicolas Abot hat-trick secured a 6-3 win over Woden Weston at Nijong Oval.

The Tigers burst out of the gates with four goals inside the opening 25 minutes to wrap up a win to end the year.
