RNA chief executive Brendan Christou said it had been another "fantastic show" with a record number of entries in the beef, horse and woodchopping competitions.

"It's humbling to think of the history of this event and to think that 140 years later, the Ekka continues to go from strength to strength thanks to the passion Queenslanders have for their show," he said.

"Some of these competitions date back to the very first Ekka, so it's fantastic to see they are continuing to grow and attract the next generation."

Mr Christou said in the Ekka's 140th year, the brand-new, half-price Twilight Ticket had been a great success with more than 12,500 sold. Guests had also praised the two evening fireworks displays, describing them as "the best they had ever seen".

More than 185,000 dagwood dogs were eaten over the past 10 days, along with more than 153,000 strawberry sundaes, both up by 1000 on last year. However, attendance numbers were on track to be slightly down on previous years, with Mr Christou blaming the influenza outbreak.

Despite the slight drop in attendance, a bright and beautiful moment was shared by newlyweds Tamara and Darcy McInnes on the first day of the Ekka (August 11), as the wedding party toured Sideshow Alley on the same day as the ceremony itself.

But this was not a spur-of-the moment decision, the couple actually met across from the Ekka at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital - where Tamara works as a nurse. They also had their first date in nearby Victoria Park.

"Darcy is scared on the big rides, but I love them! The scarier the better," Mrs McInnes said.

"On the day, the bumper cars were awesome. Everyone was just having fun and acting like big kids. But my favourite photo on the day was next to the moving carousel, it was beautiful and created exactly the image I dreamt of when heading to Sideshow Alley.

"We were just elated. The pressure of the ceremony was over and we were joyful. People kept commenting and congratulating us. It was time to unwind and celebrate with our friends."

Moving onto the animal front, one dog that turned plenty of heads during the show was a five-year-old poodle by the name of Brie. Owner Jane Boehm gave her dog a pink and purple colour scheme last year, and chose yellow and orange this year.

"I'm a dog groomer, I was trying something out and I thought it looked cool," she said.

"She's not just a pretty face - she has got loads of titles, she's a top competition dog. People like to see her, people don't think she is real until she moves."

It took several hours to create Brie's colour scheme using hair dye, but it cannot be washed off, meaning she will remain multi-coloured until her hair grows out.

Speaking of animals not looking real, over at the cake display, bypassers could be forgiven for thinking there was a live sea turtle in the cabinet. Instead, they were looking at the result of five days' work by Emily Cameron.

The 21-year-old Brisbane baker had recently returned from a trip to Cairns where she had seen sea turtles for the first time, so had plenty of real-life pictures to base her design on.

The cake was created and assembled piece-by-piece and took out second prize in the intermediate cake decorating competition. Ms Cameron had previously taken home another runner-up ribbon and a first place.

Finally, there was also a celebrity lookalike at this year's show, with 2??-year-old Persian cat Henry bearing a striking resemblance to social media sensation Grumpy Cat.

Owner Fiona Coombs said the similarity was constantly pointed out by strangers who met Henry, but she had done her research on the matter.

"The legendary Grumpy Cat is taken off the snowshoe cat. But Persians do look a bit grumpy when they've just been asleep," she said.

"The Persian breed is fairly docile and so much fun to have. They're not demanding either, Henry is just a dope."
