The development application seeks to put a new Bunnings Warehouse on the old council works depot and storage yard site at 89 West St near the Alma St corner and it would replace the current Bunnings on Camooweal St.
If approved, the development would have a total retail are of 5607.5 sq m and would have a main warehouse, timber trade sales, a building materials and landscape yard, bagged good canopy, an outdoor nursery, main entrance and outdoor display areas.
The proposal calls for 172 car park with two entrances from West St and one from Alma St and the facility would operate from 6am to 9pm seven days a week.
According to the proposal the construction would employ 120 people and when built the store would employ around 70 jobs.
The proposal’s economic needs assessment report projected local hardware and related expenditure in Mount Isa would be $35.4m by 2019 with over 80% spent locally and an expanded Bunnings was needed due to the growth of population in the trade area, generating additional household expenditure.
It said lower prices could be expected due to the increased competition and Bunnings would cater to the renovation market of the older housing stock.
The developers held a pre-lodgement meeting with Council on August 1 which discussed a number of issues.
The meeting found only a “negligible area” would be affected by a 1 in 100 year flood event and any possible cafe on the premises would not need specific approval.
It also found no new water, sewer or telecommunications infrastructure would be needed to support the site though a traffic impact report, site plan and stormwater management plan would be needed when the main application comes to council.
The public comment period is until September 6 and written comments can be provided to council on 4747 3200 or email city@mountisa.qld.gov.au or on the council’s website www.mountisa.qld.gov.au
After completion of the public notification, Council officers will assess the application including any submissions received and present a report to Council.
