Burgoyne, 34, has signed the extension on the back of playing every game in Hawthorn's 2017 season.

"It's a lot of years," Burgoyne told Hawthorn's website."It takes a lot longer to recover these days."

"You want it again and you want to come back next year and play on the MCG in front of all the fanatic supporters," he said.

"Hopefully it lights a fire in the other guys as well and the younger guys who haven't experienced any of that yet - that they want to come back, train hard and have a big year and get to September where everyone wants to be."

Burgoyne joined the Hawks at the end of the 2009 season. He has played 184 of his 339 AFL games at the Hawks, the other 157 at Port Adelaide.

He is a four-time premiership winner (2004 with Port Adelaide and 2013-2015 with Hawthorn) and was an All Australian in 2006.

Hawthorn's list manager Graham Wright said the impact of Burgoyne's presence at the club cannot be measured.

"Shaun is a great of our game and despite being 34 he continues to back-up and perform each week," Wright said.

"The leadership and experience Shaun brings to the group is invaluable and we are rapt that he has signed on for another year.

"With so many young players now getting their opportunities at AFL level, the guidance and mentorship that Shaun provides is pivotal to their development.

"He's played 105 consecutive games to date and we look forward to seeing plenty more in the brown and gold."

Burgoyne's re-signing comes on the back of retirements by fellow veterans Luke Hodge and Josh Gibson in 2017.

Despite his durability and continual excellence in the game, Burgoyne said getting to 400 games wasn't a goal at this stage.

"We'll look to get to [350 games] first and then reassess," he said.

"I've been trying to play each game and enjoy each game, because I don't know when my last one is going to be at my age - it could be taken away from you at any stage."

His longevity is remarkable given he had surgery on an injured knee before the 2010 season. Many thought Burgoyne would continue to struggle with that injury, but he has excelled at the Hawks, whether playing through the midfield or in the back line when needing a steadying presence.

In June, Hawks' coach Alastair Clarkson publicly urged Burgoyne to play on in 2018.

"He's a great role model for his teammates and our footy club and he doesn't look like he's slowing down," Clarkson said.

"We sit down with all our guys that have been such decorated servants with our footy club - they deserve that opportunity to try to control their futures.

"But right at the present, [Burgoyne] is playing such good footy, I would love to see him keep going."
