Stuart has been put forward as the perfect replacement for Laurie Daley, who was sacked on Friday after five series in charge of the Blues.

The Raiders coach led the Blues to a series win in 2005 before again taking over the reins in 2011 and 2012.

He guided the Raiders to last season's NRL preliminary final, but the Green Machine stumbled this year and can't make the eight ahead of their final-round clash against the Melbourne Storm on Saturday.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner said the board would need to discuss whether Stuart, who is contracted as Canberra coach until the end of 2020, could coach both his NRL club and the Blues at the same time.

Furner felt next year was shaping as an important one for the Raiders as they look to return to the NRL finals after narrowly missing out on the top eight in 2017.

He said while Stuart's assistant coaches Dean Pay and Mick Crawley were both experienced, the board would need to consider the logistics of covering Stuart while he was away in State of Origin camp.

"It would have to go to the board, the board would have to discuss it," Furner said.

"Yes he's got very able and experienced assistant coaches, but we've got to get back on track next year to make up for this year. So we've got a big job here, all of us.

"He hasn't approached us ... it'd be silly to go into what-ifs until that happened."

Stuart said he hadn't even considered the Blues job before he was asked whether he was interested on Monday.

But he said he was passionate about the Blues ending Queensland's dominance, with the Maroons having won 11 of the past 12 series.

That passion and the fact he understands what Origin is all about is the reason he's being touted as the ideal replacement for Daley, although Brad Fittler was the favourite to take over the reins.

"I have not even thought of it. There's a rule there that was put in place ... that you couldn't coach an NRL club," Stuart said on NRL 360.

"As all of us who played in the jumper, we're all very passionate about it. It's why there's so much comment about it.

"It's something that burns away at you because we're embarrassed by the results. Whether you're involved in it or not you're embarrassed by the results because it hurts.

"That's why there's so much angst and so much opinion, comment on it because it's the best game of the year."

Meanwhile, New Zealand Warriors prop Charlie Gubb has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Raiders.

Canberra looks to have beaten North Queensland to the 27-year-old's signature as they try to replace Toronto-bound Dave Taylor and bolster their forward pack's depth.

Gubb has played 39 NRL games across five seasons with the Warriors. Furner confirmed the Raiders' interest in him.

"The coaches are looking at who's available and looking at the rosters - you've got to fill 30 next year, plus six development players, so it's a bigger roster," Furner said.

"Obviously we're always looking to bolster the forward pack, especially the front row. If Charlie Gubb comes our way that'd be fantastic."
