The state funded upgrade is part of the $40 million Western Roads Upgrade Program developed to help stabilise the economy of western Queensland by providing a sustainable pipeline of investment for local government workforces.
Acting Roads, Road Safety and Ports Minister Steven Miles said works like these meant a lot to local communities.
“Paving and sealing this vital road link means motorists now have a safer drive between two iconic western Queensland towns,” he said.
“The upgrades to the Diamantina Developmental Road have been successfully completed thanks to the considerable efforts of committed people from both state and local government.
Diamantina Shire Mayor, Geoff Morton said the project delivered major benefits.
“For the first time our shire has access to a fully-sealed road network.” Cr Morton said. “This is a significant milestone for our communities and visitors alike who will now have better access to vital services. Everyone can now feel safer and more confident on our roads.”
Cr Morton said an all-weather road also boosted the region.
“Industry can take advantage of being able to more readily transport livestock and freight from northern Queensland to southern areas.”
Boulia Shire Mayor, Rick Britton said the WRUP was supported at the grass-roots level by teams from Boulia Shire Council and RoadTek appointed to undertake the project.
“We are passionate about having better roads and investing in our people,” Cr Britton said.
“This project enabled us to financially sustain our local workforce way while delivering something of great social value.”
