Eagles coach Adam Simpson said his staff had scoured through some horrible statistical re-assessments from their gutsy 10-point win over Port in round seven in May.

"We will have to play a little bit better than we did on both occasions this year," Simpson said.

The Eagles conceded the overall possession tally by a whopping 71 disposals, as well as clearances from stoppages (44-35) and managed only seven marks inside their forward 50m, compared to 12 from Port, who also dominated the inside 50 count 68 to 39.

Then in their round 16 clash in Perth in July, West Coast faded disastrously in the second half after leading by two goals at the main break.

Port coach Ken Hinkley structurally altered his forward and defensive set-ups, which triggered a Power surge and 32-point victory as his side slammed on 11 of the last 15 goals in the clash at Domain Stadium.

The Power's intrusive defensive press and deep forward battery engineered 36 inside 50s to just 14 from the Eagles in the second half.

"The game we played early in the year we only won one stat and that was the score," Simpson recalled on Fox Footy.

"The inside 50s were something around 70 to 40. The numbers weren't going our way but we held on.

"Our backs really stood up that day and I think we were pretty good around the contest as well.

"But to play that type of game with the ball played in their half, they've been really good at that all year... that won't cut it in this game."

West Coast boasts a healthy record at Adelaide Oval, notching five victories from six visits including three straight wins over Port, all by 10 points or less.

Simpson has contemplated a shock call-up for mature-age small forward recruit Willie Rioli to make his debut in the knockout final.

The lively goal-shark opportunist has suffered a horrible first season after crossing from powerful SANFL club Glenelg with two serous hamstring injuries sending him into long-term rehabilitation programs, stalling his highly anticipated debut.

Rioli, 22, remains a serious contender to be in West Coast's provisional 25-man travelling squad with any decision on whether Simpson takes a substantial finals selection gamble left until close to bouncedown on Saturday afternoon.

Veteran utility Sharrod Wellingham could be in the squad to inject flexibility into the midfield or even defense, where he could possibly take a run-with assignment on some of Port's initiators around the ball such as Jared Polec or Sam Gray.

The 2010 Collingwood premiership follower was dumped for the last two engagements of the regular 2017 season on the back of just 11 disposals in West Coast's comeback win over Carlton last month.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season and has respectfully retained hopes of a finals campaign with successive 30-odd possession performances at alignment club East Perth since being dumped.

Port is weighing up a defensive match-up for Josh Kennedy, with regular full-back Tom Jonas serving the second week of his two-game suspension for a foolish and undisciplined off-the-ball hit on Western Bulldogs follower Luke Dahlhaus in round 22.

Veteran big man Jackson Trengove looks a serious contender for a call-up to take on a big defensive assignment after his recovery from a nagging foot injury.

Another genuine danger to Port's hopes of reversing a losing stretch to West Coast is veteran small forward Mark LeCras, who booted four goals in each match against Port this season.

Starving Kennedy, who has booted 68 goals this season at an average of four a game, as well as LeCras, is critical to Port's chances of winning.
