The Canberran was third behind reigning world champion Peter Sagan, with Greg Van Avermaet second in the Quebec Grand Prix - just two weeks before the world championships in Norway.
The 26-year-old is one of the favourites for the men's road race crown in Bergen on September 24.
While Sagan's won the honour to wear the world championship jersey the last two years, Matthews wanted to reverse the Quebec result in a fortnight.
"I hope it'll be the same podium at the worlds, but in a different order. We all want to be in the top seat," the Team Sunweb rider said.
