But Palmer's current focus is on helping those elite athletes build their links with corporate Australia with the launch of the Change The Game program on Tuesday.

Both Basketball Australia and Football Federation Australia made big announcements of their own on Monday.

The WNBL will return to television for the first time in two years and W-League players are now guaranteed a minimum wage following the introduction of their historic first collective bargaining agreement.

It comes off the back of advancements in pay for both our female cricketers and netballers, with the former leading the way.

Women's sport in Australia is in massive transition, including the inaugural season of the AFLW at the start of the year.

When asked about what the W-League pay deal meant, Palmer felt it was the continuation of a path towards fully professional female sport.

"It's a start and I have to say I'm an adviser to the Male Champions of Change for sport and they have made a commitment around pay for female athletes," she told Fairfax Media.

"It's going to take time, they're moving very quickly and I think cricket have set the standard, netball not far behind.

"I think over the next five years we're going to see full professionalism of women's sport and that's a great thing."

The Australian Institute of Sport successfully trialled the Change The Game program in conjunction with BlueScope and has now embarked on the program proper.

It links 10 female athletes with 10 business professionals to help with their personal development and transition to life after sport.

The inductees included Australian cricketer Ellyse Perry, world champion canoer Alyce Burnett, Para-cycling world champ Jessica Gallagher and dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist Belinda Hocking.

"This is an opportunity to learn much more than about sport and it will help them connect with other organisations, understand what business is about and certainly reading today that 80 per cent of women in the US in the top Fortune 500 companies played sport in their early life," Palmer said.

"So I think that's a good sign for the future."

Perry's one of the most marketable female athletes in Australia and she saw this as a chance to explore opportunities.

She's not only a world-class allrounder, but a dual international, having played soccer for the Matildas as well.

"I've been playing elite sport for the last 10-11 years so I've kind of been wrapped up in a bubble," Perry said.

"In a lot of ways a program like this helps you explore things and look at opportunities outside of sport when I've finished my career and things I might potentially want to do.

"Also just to make really great relationships, whether it's with fellow athletes or people outside of sport in the corporate sector I think this program is a wonderful chance to do that."

Perry will play two games at Manuka Oval in the upcoming Ashes series against world champions England.

They'll play three one-dayers, one Test and three Twenty20s as part of the women's format, with the last two T20s in Canberra potentially deciding the series.

Perry said the Australian women's team had been a regular at Manuka and had turned it into a home fortress with some convincing wins.

"I think it's a wonderful place to finish off. Manuka's a great ground for T20 cricket as well," she said.

"It should be really high-scoring matches and England are going to be really tough competition for us."
