There were 50 matters of potential fraud connected to the Back to Work program, relating to 163 separate applications referred by the application processing staff to the compliance team for investigation.

Some of the cases allegedly involved people making applications that were deceptive, for example by falsifying documentation, in order to gain Back to Work funding to which they were not entitled.

Under the Back to Work scheme, employers can receive payments for hiring long-term unemployed or young job seekers.

The regional program included $10,000 for an unemployed worker, $15,000 for a long-term unemployed worker and $20,000 for hiring a job-seeker aged 15 to 24.

The scheme was expanded into south-east Queensland in the 2017-18 budget.

The figures were detailed following a Liberal National Party question on notice to the Labor government.

The alleged fraud equated to 2.25 per cent of the total 7324 applications received.

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said processing staff manually checked each application to ensure criteria and conditions were met prior to approval for funding.

"Since the Back to Work program commenced in July 2016, 50 applications have been referred to the proper authorities for investigation, an extremely small percentage of the overall program," she said.

"All Back to Work applications have to meet strict criteria and guidelines that all employers need to adhere to - anyone who seeks to ignore these requirements will be held to account.

"If there are any employers seeking to unfairly exploit this program, they'll be found out and weeded out - but clearly the vast majority are doing the right thing."

Opposition employment spokesman Jarrod Bleijie said young Queenslanders faced job insecurity and there was a youth jobs crisis.

"It's important that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and that long-term jobs are created across Queensland," he said.

Mr Bleijie said the LNP had a long-term economic plan to create jobs across Queensland and boost apprenticeship numbers.

But Ms Grace said Back to Work was an exceptionally successful program which had already helped 7500 Queenslanders into employment.

"To date, more than $100 million has been paid out or committed to employers throughout the state - money that's being directly injected into local economies," she said.

"We're well on track to exceeding our target of 8000 jobs through this program."
