My name is Lane Griffiths, a work experience student at the North West Star. I am 15 years old and attending year 10 at Good Shepherd Catholic College, Mount Isa. I attended Barkly Highway State School from prep to year 6, and then Saint Kieran’s during year 7. I was born in Cairns, where I lived for the first four years of my life before moving to Mount Isa in 2006. I am interested in English and drama, which I am studying at school, and plan to achieve a career as an author. I have begun work on my first novel, which I plan to have finished in a few years. It is a political drama based on medieval Europe that follows the conflict of two rival kingdoms and the wars that follow. I also participated in the recent Good Shepherd Catholic College musical, Smithy, where I portrayed the character of Nigel. I enjoy playing video games, along with writing short stories and studying history.

I have chosen to do work experience at the North West Star out of personal interest, as I had previously completed classes on newspaper companies during year 9 media. I enjoyed the classes, and, after consideration, thought the North West Star to be an interesting place for work experience. Comparing what I have learnt in year 9 media to the first two days of work experience so far, there are some similarities I have recognised, but also a lot of differences that I had not previously known or considered. Such as how active it is, news doesn’t just come to you, but you must seek it out. Moving around town for interviews or to get information and notes for an article.
