The Giants are seriously contemplating turning to the magic of Steve Johnson as part of a remodelled forward line after the season-ending injuries to spearhead Jeremy Cameron and ruckman Shane Mumford.

The temptation to hand Johnson an immediate recall will be huge after the Giants managed just six goals in their loss to Adelaide. Johnson enhanced his chances with a solid effort in the reserves and a strong week on the track.

"There's no doubt it's enticing to look at him because of what he can do," Cameron said.

"His deft touch and moments he can create throughout his career is handy in finals footy. We've seen that with [Sam] Mitchell and [Matt] Priddis last week in the clutch moments. You'll see it with experienced players in those big moments they only need those eight to 10 possessions but they can turn to gold, especially in tight situations. That's definitely in his favour.

"He can hit the scoreboard, our forward line hasn't been functioning as well as it has been the last couple of weeks so that goes into his favour. There's a lot in his favour."

After two below par performances, the Giants coach put his players on notice on Wednesday. Nick Haynes and Nathan Wilson will be among those with nervous waits before the team is announced on Thursday.

"There's no doubt right now there'll be some players walking around the gym wondering if they will be playing," Cameron said on Wednesday. "That's what it needs to be because our second quarter wasn't at the level it needed to be, especially in a final.

"If that means change has to happen, then change will happen."

Devon Smith is tipped to return after training strongly on Wednesday while youngsters Tim Taranto and Matthew Kennedy, back-up ruckman Dawson Simpson and forgotten backman Tim Mohr are also in the frame for recalls.

While it's not inconceivable there could be a big name casualty, the most favoured scenario would see Johnson and Smith returning as part of a smaller forward set up.

Veteran Brett Deledio, who is winless from four finals appearances, will keep his place despite an underwhelming game, Cameron said.

Cameron backed Lachie Whitfield, who signed a contract extension tying him to the Giants until the end of 2020, to bounce back.

Ryan Griffen, however, is struggling to hit top pace and is "highly unlikely" to return this year.
