There were two fires reported along the dried Leichhardt riverbed on Wednesday night – one in Mornington and one in Parkside – according to a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services media spokeswoman.
The first reported fire happened in Duchess Road and Flynn Street in Mornington, according to the spokeswoman.
Three crews fought the fire which was reported to QFES at about 5pm.
“At 5.20pm our crews were monitoring the fire and there was no threat to property,” the spokeswoman said.
“At 5.30 we got the word back the north flank and south flank of the fire was under control.”
At 6.50pm the fire was reported to have been burnt out aside from some smoldering logs. QFES left the scene.
Another fire was reported in Riverview Terrace in Parkside at 12.30am – the other side of the riverbed. Four QFES crews fought the fire in strong wind conditions, said the spokeswoman.
“It was described as a large grass fire. At 1.20am there was still no threat to property and they were still working to contain the fire.
“They were putting in fire breaks to help control the fire.”
Firefighters dampened the hot spots and left the scene at 2.35am.
The QFES spokeswoman was unable to determine the causes of the fire from the reports she received.
