Mount Isa Mayor Cr Joyce McCulloch said the 13-kilometre combined cycling and walking track is an important part of council efforts to encourage a healthy living lifestyle in Mount Isa.
“We are very much in favour of people getting out doors more and engaging safely in physical activity,” Cr McCulloch said.
“We consulted with a number of local sporting associations including cycling groups and were successful in securing a million dollars in Queensland Government funding to take the plans for this new track forward.”

The bitumen track is almost three metres wide to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians, and follows Moondarra Drive from Ryan Road to the Lake Moondarra gates.
“The design uses the hilly nature of the local area to enhance the challenge and experience of those using the track, whether it be for fitness or recreation, on a bicycle or on foot,” Cr McCulloch said
The Mayor said it was also designed with safety in mind, providing a clear separation between the track and the main road.
“We’re acutely aware that we’ve had two casualties over the past 10 years involving cyclists who were out on our main roads training,” she said.
“We must do whatever we can to stop anyone else from being hurt or worse.
“The Moondarra cycling track will be a quality alternative to road cycling and walking.”
Cr McCulloch said while Council is undertaking the principle construction work, many local businesses are benefitting from the work through supply of materials, contract labour, plant and equipment hire.
“Once the track is completed Mount Isa will have the opportunity to attract new events to the city, further benefiting the local economy,” she said.
“Adventure sport is becoming big business. Having this kind of track in an outback setting beside Lake Moondarra will be a key selling point to attract these kinds of events to Mount Isa.”
The new track is due to be completed in November.
