A pesky crosswind did little to assist the riders as they set off on their handicap times.
First was an out of form Lyn Roughan who departed with the start of the stopwatch.
Kiri Labuschagne and Jason Ahearn then left with a two minute gap to bridge.
Last was A Grader Doug Humphries, returning to racing from a hiatus who gave the front marker three minutes 40 seconds.
The middle pair of riders took 9km to catch Roughan, who rode steadily averaging just over 30 km/hr.
With traffic holding up the turn at 10km, it played into Humphries favour as precious seconds ticked by for the combined bunch of three.
Working through speeds in the range of 32 to 36 km, Humphries only tagged onto the back with a couple of kilometres to go.
Nervously the four riders rolled through on their turns, with Kiri sacrificing herself for her team mates trying to string Humphries out.
As she rolled off the front of the line, Humphries hit the accelerator and rode away to take line honours in a ride time of 34 mins 18 seconds, with Ahearn taking silver and Roughan bronze.
