It was a surprise to see Champagne Cuddles in the final field for Saturday's Golden Rose at Rosehill, but her trainer Bjorn Baker won't be surprised if she causes an upset.

The Not A Single Doubt filly has bounced off her second to Alizee in the Tea Rose Stakes last weekend and Baker decided to take a shot at the first group 1 restricted to three-year-olds for the season.

"She has had that run at 1400 metres and I thought it was worth having a go at this race, the way she is at the moment," Baker said. "She has a great constitution and is just handling every run and getting better.

"The thing we know is that she will run a strong 1400 metres, a lot of these would have to be a question mark at the trip. The seven-day back-up was always in our minds and the way she is, I think she will run well."

Champagne Cuddles is a $17 outsider in a market dominated by Run To The Rose winner Menari at $2 despite drawing gate 11 in the field of 14.

Tye Angland, who rode Champagne Cuddles in her narrow defeats in the Silver Shadow Stakes, Furious Stakes and the Tea Rose, is committed to Trapeze Artist, so Jason Collett returns to the saddle of the filly.

"Jason hasn't been beaten on her, winning on her twice and has ridden a lot of her trackwork," Baker said. "He knows her very well and he is on a very fit filly.

"She has drawn really well and hopefully we can ride her with a bit of cover and let her find the line.

"It is one of those races where it might come down to getting the right breaks and the good gate [of eight] is a good start, when you look at where the others have drawn."

Gerald Ryan couldn't be happier with Menari, who gets the chance to prove himself the best colt of his generation.

He was the first colt home in the Golden Slipper - where he was fourth - and he has developed into a powerful machine as a three-year-old. His wins in the Rosebud and Run To The Rose suggest he is only going to be better at the 1400 metres.

"I have always thought that 1400 metres was going to be his best trip," Ryan said. "He worked here [at Rosehill] on Monday and was great. He has improved again and this race was always going to be where he was at his top."

The draw didn't favour many of those in the market with $6 second-pick in betting Pariah, Gold Standard and likely leader Formality coming up with double-figure gates.

Unbeaten Victorian Merchant Navy, who won the McNeil Stakes in Melbourne at his spring return, tightened in betting to $8 at Sportsbet after drawing barrier two, and had his first look at Rosehill on Tuesday morning in front of trainer Ciaron Maher.

"It is just good to get him up here early and have a gallop on the track before Saturday," Maher said. "We have drawn well."
