The Tigers are just one win away from their first grand final in 35 years. In order to get there, they must overcome Greater Western Sydney in the second preliminary final at the MCG on Saturday.

But Edwards has already visualised what it might feel like running out on the MCG on that last Saturday in September.

"It's pretty hard, you can't really control what you dream about," Edwards said at Punt Road Oval on Thursday.

"So it happens every now and then, I wake up and be like, 'nah, it's just the process', and think about this week," he said with a smile.

"I (dream about) just running around the oval celebrating after, but I can't control it so I'm sure everyone dreams about that all the time.

"I can't believe we could be one win from a grand final, I haven't really thought about what a grand final would be like, I'm just thinking about the prelim and what the crowd's going to be like and how we have to play and what the last game was like. So I'm just taking it one step at a time."

Having been at Richmond for 11 years, Edwards has seen his fair share of highs and lows at the club.

The forward admitted there were times where he thought the Tigers would never get this far into a season and said it was "surreal" to be playing in the first preliminary final of his career.

"We haven't made it past first the round (of the finals) so those thoughts come and go, but I don't think too far ahead now, it's just the next week," Edwards said.

"It doesn't come along too often for most players so (I'm) just trying to make the most of it and embracing the whole thing."

And now that the Tigers have made it to the final four, Edwards doesn't see why they can't go all the way this year.

"At the club we just say, why not? Why not us? We saw what happened last year with the Bulldogs that you can come from anywhere," he said.

"It's not necessarily (a case of) this is our time, but there's no reason why it couldn't be."

One of the most one-sided crowds in VFL/AFL history is expected to attend Saturday's match, with 95,000 mostly Richmond supporters set to cram into the MCG and Edwards believes that massive show of support is "priceless".

"Definitely going into the game you feel like you've got the whole army behind you," he said.

"You feel like you've got momentum just by taking a nice mark or doing one good play, it feels like you've kicked about three goals in a row so it's probably worth a bit, actually."

Edwards revealed he likes to crack a few jokes in the lead up to a big game in order to counteract his "over the top" feeling of being uptight.

"That brings me back down to a level I like playing at," he said.

The winner of Saturday's preliminary final will play either Adelaide or Geelong in the 2017 AFL grand final next week.
