Vergano was presented with his life member pin by Cricket ACT chairman John Miller at the annual general meeting on Wednesday night.

Billy Floros also became a life member in honour of his services to indoor cricket that have taken him around the globe as a player, coach and manager.

Vergano played grade cricket "way back 30-odd years ago" when he was in Yass but it wasn't until 2001 that he started to make an impact.

Vergano joined Cricket ACT operations manager, but found himself in charge six months later and had to pick up the pieces after the Comets were booted from the domestic one-day competition.

He left his post in 2015 following what was arguably the biggest summer of cricket Canberra had ever witnessed, leaving behind a lasting legacy for the game in the capital.

"I had 14 years to do it too mate," Vergano laughed.

"We put together something like $17 million worth of projects in the time I was here, between Manuka Oval lights, Manuka Oval reconstruction, getting the funding for Phillip Oval which was probably my last real big involvement, Harrison and re-doing the training nets.

"You can look at all those with satisfaction, and the players that were produced through the teamwork of our high performance department which was outstanding.

"We got the Meteors up and running. It had been 13 years since we'd had a first class women's team.

"Not only do you start them but you see them consolidate and grow to where they're a great chance this year where they're a great chance of winning the WNCL which would be fantastic to see.

"It's a great personal honour but you don't do it on your own. You do it working with great people, with boards and chairmen, working with great staff, it makes it worthwhile."

Vergano was there to oversee a batch of youngsters including Jason Behrendorff, Ryan Carters and Jason Floros, who all progressed to the first-class arena.

But the best of them all is a former Manuka Oval groundsman - Australia's greatest off-spinner, Nathan Lyon.

"We brought a young guy down to Canberra, we put him through his training course as a curator, he's a hard worker, he took that into cricket," Vergano said.

"You just love seeing that success come to good people. They're the highlights as well, it's about the people, the friendships and the relationships you have along the way."

Vergano is still involved in the game at club level as the president of the ANU Cricket Club, who are gearing up for a tour of New Zealand under new coach Andrew Dawson.

The club will take advantage of direct Singapore Airlines flights from Canberra to Wellington - where they will get a civic reception hosted by the mayor of Wellington and Cricket Wellington ahead of a four-match tour.
