The increasing professionalism of women's football, and in particular the increasing alignments between VFL women's and AFL clubs, has left the future of the volunteer-run club up in the air.

But if Sunday was a last hurrah, then it was a glorious one too, as the Falcons withstood a late charge from Diamond Creek to prevail 5.5 (35) to 4.4 (28).

Falcons veteran and Melbourne AFLW captain Daisy Pearce said this premiership had been particularly hard-earned given the challenges faced by the club this season. "They're all very sweet," Pearce said.

"When you get to this point you desperately want to win them.

"I think also this year, given all the challenges we've had as a club with a really disrupted start of the season, with the back of AFLW, we got a pretty stiff draw, there was a sense within Falcon Land that the competition was going to try to make it pretty bloody hard for us to win one, so I think it makes it even sweeter when you know that that's been the case.

"We had the CEO of AFL Victoria say congratulations to Diamond Creek in his opening address at the 'pres' night, and if I wasn't already motivated to get this one I was then.

"It could be the last one as a club as well. We wanted to go out with a real bang because we don't know what the future holds."

Pearce said she hadn't given any thought to where she'd play next season, but downplayed a suggestion she'd join new entrants Casey despite the club's alignment with Melbourne. "I'm living up in Bendigo so I don't know if I'll make out to Casey regardless of what happens.

"I'll just get through the next AFL season. I haven't really put any energy into thinking about it."

Pearce's Demons teammate Karen Paxman was named best afield in the Falcons' win.

Diamond Creek youngster Chloe Molloy left the field in tears with a suspected collarbone injury after kicking a goal following a heavy bump. Molloy is expected to be an early selection in the upcoming AFLW draft.
