In a dramatic day for the Blues on Thursday, Trigg was given his marching orders after three-and-a-half years at the club despite believing he was secure in the job until very recently.

While LoGiudice said it was a tough decision to make, he insisted Carlton had not let Trigg down and said the club needed a different type of leader with skill sets that Trigg lacked to oversee the next stage of its development.

LoGiudice expected Trigg to continue on in the role until the club found his replacement.

"We haven't been working behind his back at all," the Carlton president told Trade Radio on Friday.

"We've been working together with Steven and having discussions with Steven and we came to a resolution yesterday that we thought it was the right [decision].

"This is a very tough call. These decisions are not made easy, these decisions are difficult decisions, we have been chatting with Steven over that period of time and they are difficult discussions and they are tough times for everybody.

"They're respectful discussions so we don't believe he's been not treated well."

LoGiudice also denied Carlton hastily moved on Trigg in a bid to hire Lethlean, especially with Collingwood and Hawthorn also looking for a new chief executive.

"Our decisions are not based on what other clubs are doing. It's quite simple," he said.

"We certainly have a plan of where we're going as a football club [but] we don't base our decisions on what other clubs are doing.

"I would hope that Simon Lethlean would be part of this process. We expect there'll be multiple candidates and there'll be good quality candidates, by the way.

"He [Lethlean] has got the right skill sets and he's got the expertise required to lead a football club.

"We're not making decisions under pressure. Steven will remain the CEO of the football club until we find a new candidate so we will take the time that is required to find the right person.

"We're not going to be rushed by any outside noise as we always have done over the last few years.

"We've made decisions that are in the best interests of the Carlton Football Club and we'll continue to do so."

LoGiudice said David Campbell, from executive search firm Egon Zehnder, would again assist Carlton in their next big appointment, having previously helped them land Trigg and coach Brendon Bolton.

The Carlton president expected Trigg to continue working at the club in the short-term despite being sacked and didn't anticipate the former Adelaide chief would walk out prior to the completion of the Blues' CEO search.

"I think Steven's a great person and that's not the type of leader that Steven is. I think Steven will be at work this morning," he said.

"This is a difficult situation for Steven because he's done so many good things for the football club to date and I think it's business as usual this morning.

"He understands that we have transitioned so we will continue to work closely together.

"It's very important to acknowledge exactly what Steven Trigg has done for this football club over the last three-and-a-half years to get this football club to where it is now. It's all about continuing to grow as a football club and we believe as a club we needed a different type of leader for us to take the next step.

"There are certain aspects of leadership that we're looking for that we've identified that we've spoken about that we believe Steven doesn't have."
