???There has already been plenty of movement, agitation and posturing since the grand final, with clubs preparing for the annual trade period, beginning on Monday. Jon Pierik, Michael Gleeson, Daniel Cherny and Sam McClure take a look at where your club sits before the official opening of footy's open season.

The AFL trade period begins when the 18 clubs meet from 8.30am on Monday at Etihad Stadium. The 11-day trade period ends at 1.30pm on Thursday, October 19. The draft picks below are indicative only and are subject to change. The AFL will allocate compensation draft picks after players change clubs through free agency.

ADELAIDE

Picks: 16, 34, 52, 71

How can things get any worse after being embarrassed on the grand final stage? Well, when two of your stars asked to be traded for family reasons, that's how. Jake Lever will end up at Melbourne. The Crows will huff and puff but eventually the deal will get done, and they are quite within their rights to demand overs for a player they've invested three seasons in. Charlie Cameron, however, is slightly more difficult. He has a year on his contract and the Crows will want to stall his move to the Brisbane Lions. They can't afford the Bryce Gibbs deal to get blocked again if they go after him. If they truly believe he's the missing link, then throw the kitchen sink at him, not just a couple of pots and pans.

BRISBANE LIONS

Picks: 1, 12, 18, 41, 73

The Lions will be big players. They have the top pick and, in a draft without a clear No.1, will likely choose one of Paddy Dow, Cameron Rayner or Luke Davies-Uniacke. They are likely to get an extra pick at No.19 as compensation for losing free agent, and former captain, Tom Rockliff to Port Adelaide. It is doubtful they will trade pick one - unless a club has their heart set on one of that trio of players and offers the irresistible deal. They then would have three more picks inside 20 (picks 12, 18 and 19) which would position them as critical players in the drama of the next week. A club such as Essendon might have to come knocking to do something to get hold of the picks in order to get Jake Stringer and Devon Smith.

CARLTON

Picks: 3, 38, 56

Tom Rockliff nominating Port Adelaide as his preferred club has several implications. The Blues will be disappointed in not being able to add the former Lions' captain to their midfield depth, but it will also give list manager Stephen Silvagni the green light to block Gibbs' move to Adelaide for the second straight year. Why would they let arguably their best player walk out on the club with two years left on his contract? They won't, unless the Crows pay through the nose with two first-round picks (which they hope to get from Melbourne in exchange for Lever). Giant Matt Kennedy will be in the Blues' best team, but the jury is still out after only 19 matches.

COLLINGWOOD

Picks: 6, 36, 54, 59, 78

Collingwood have holes but they are not huge. They are interested in Melbourne forward Jack Watts but, without a second-round pick, would probably need to trade a player out to do the deal. They do have the first pick of the third round so that could come into it. West Coast had interest in the contracted Alex Fasolo but that interest waned and a deal seems unlikely. They need another pressure small forward and had early interest in Smith but also cooled on that. The Pies would like another fast running back - yet have not chased either Port's Jarman Impey or Gold Coast's Adam Saad - and ideally another key forward or back. Adam Tomlinson has appealed in the past but they appear more likely to keep their first pick at six.

ESSENDON

Picks: 11, 28, 46, 65

If the Bombers finish next week with the additions of Smith, Stringer and Saad, then it's been a very good trade period for them. Not only are Essendon once again becoming a destination club, but they would have added three high-quality players who suit their needs. That being pace off half-back (Saad), a known goalkicker who wants to play more in the midfield (Smith), and, let's be honest, a bloke who can win a match off his own boot in Stringer. There have been some concerns around Smith's knee but the Bombers are adamant they've done their due diligence. The trade request of Aaron Francis throws a spanner in the works, but are bound for finals again next year.

FREMANTLE

Picks: 5, 40, 55, 58

There is plenty happening at the Dockers after two seasons out of the finals. Nathan Wilson (Greater Western Sydney) and Brandon Matera (Gold Coast) are both poised to be traded to Fremantle, even though the Dockers' leadership group is understood to have concerns about Matera's character. Heading the other way are Harley Balic, who is bound for Melbourne after a troubled period at the Dockers, and high-flyer Hayden Crozier, who looks set to join the Western Bulldogs. The delistings of Zac Clarke and Jon Griffin, combined with the fact Aaron Sandilands is likely on his last legs, suggests the Dockers could on the hunt for another ruckman.

GEELONG

Picks: 20, 33, 51, 70, 88

The Cats know they need more talent if they are to jump from successive preliminary finals, with a goal-kicking small forward one area of priority. Gary Ablett will undoubtedly help in this area but Stringer now appears a long shot. The Cats do not have a first-round selection but deals will be done. As Ablett's three-year contract has been front-ended over the first two, the Suns want the Cats to make up the financial difference by paying the wage of an established player given in return. However, there has also been speculation Ablett could return home even via a three-way deal with Port Adelaide, where Steven Motlop heads to the Power, and the Power send a player to the Suns.

GOLD COAST

Picks: 2, 19, 24, 35, 37, 74

The Suns will be a major player in trade period, as champion midfielder Gary Ablett is one of the headline acts. The Suns want an established player in return. Rebounding defender Saad wants to join Essendon, and a second-round pick would likely get that deal done. Defender Rory Thompson still has two years to run on his contract but he could be moved for the right offer. The Suns have got to get their house in order under new coach Stuart Dew otherwise this franchise could fold. Dew's relationship with Kurt Tippett at Sydney could see the veteran big man head further north.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

Picks: 23, 25, 63, 69

It's a seemingly annual event: the bleeding of players from Greater Western Sydney, and it's on again. Wilson (Fremantle), Smith (Essendon) and Kennedy (Carlton) have all requested trades from the Giants, while Tomlinson has been targeted by the Saints. Still the Giants could be well pleased to have secured their brightest stars such as Josh Kelly and Lachie Whitfield. In terms of who might come in, GWS have been looking at a small forward, as well as ruck depth. Veteran Shane Mumford's body has been failing him, and he could be on the move for the right price.

HAWTHORN

Picks: 32, 42, 60, 79

The Hawks are in a curious position. They are interested in Impey, yet it is unclear how they would get a deal done if he wanted to go there given they traded their first round pick this year to St Kilda to get Jaeger O'Meara. Then again, list manager Graham Wright typically gets deals done so he would find a way. They would be happy to trade Ty Vickery a year after trading him into the club, but it is doubtful they will find a suitor. Luke Hodge will get to the Lions with a rats-and-mice late-pick deal. He cannot go there as a free agent because he lodged retirement forms at the end of the year and so he must get there via a trade or the draft.

MELBOURNE

Picks: 10, 27, 45, 64, 82

The Demons have well and truly already made their intentions clear. Adelaide defender Lever has declared he has agreed to a four-year deal, worth about $3 million, but the Crows are extremely miffed and are set to play hard ball. The Demons are willing to let Watts go, having questioned whether the former No.1 pick can deliver the competitiveness needed to be a consistent force. As reported by Fairfax Media, Melbourne also insist forward Jesse Hogan is a required player, but the Dockers are of the belief that the WA product could be available should the right deal be done. Hogan is contracted until the end of 2019.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Picks: 4, 21, 44, 62,

The least that can be said of North Melbourne is that they are prepared to have a crack ... because they have had a crack at everyone. There is no shame in trying and missing on winner-of-everything Dustin Martin and Kelly, even after offering mega-deals. They have, though, also been in for a plethora of other players, all of whom have said thanks but no thanks. That leaves them still in the hunt for a few players. The Kangaroos are prepared to look at a trade for ruckman Todd Goldstein but his big contract for next year is a deterrent to other clubs.

PORT ADELAIDE

Picks: 29, 47, 66

Another club set to be a big player in the next fortnight. Port have already lost versatile tall Jackson Trengove to the Western Bulldogs through free agency, and his close friend Impey - though contracted - could also be heading for the exit, with the Bulldogs and Hawks both showing interest. Fringe players Aaron Young (Gold Coast) and Brendon Ah Chee will also likely be at other clubs next years. Coming in is likely to be former Brisbane Lions captain Rockliff, while Port have also been keenly pursuing Geelong free agent Motlop, and met Melbourne's contracted forward Watts.

RICHMOND

Picks: 15, 17, 50, 53, 72

So active this time last year, the Tigers, suddenly reigning premiers, now find themselves in the unlikely position of being the hunted. Richmond had been circling Josh Schache but, despite the intrigue surrounding his future at Brisbane, a move now looks unlikely. Instead the Tigers' main involvement in this trade period could come from fringe players leaving Punt Road. Midfielder Anthony Miles is too good to be playing weekly in the VFL, and has been in the sights of Hawthorn, while Sam Lloyd - who unlike Miles in contracted - has been linked to Geelong.

ST KILDA

Picks: 7, 8, 43, 57, 61

The Saints have cash and picks to splash, but as North Melbourne have found, actually landing someone good is easier said than done. St Kilda went hard after Kelly but his call to re-sign with the Giants has forced the Saints to consider alternate plans. They enquired about contracted West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff, but the Eagles are insisting he isn't up for grabs. St Kilda have now tabled a big offer to contracted Giant Tomlinson but, while he'd be a handy pick up, he doesn't solve their midfield run-and-class issues. Delisted Swan Michael Talia is another the Saints have eyes on, while fringe ruckman Tom Hickey looms as trade bait.

SYDNEY
Picks: 14, 31, 49, 68, 86

If Watts is willing to move interstate, Sydney look the perfect fit. Watts is a man with supreme talent but who, at times, can look laconic which has frustrated the Demons. The Bloods' famous culture would certainly give Watts the best chance for his career to thrive. And what about Tippet? The Swans have been on the record saying it would be "unlikely" that the big man would be traded. If the jungle drums are true, with Essendon and Richmond lurking, and maybe the Suns, then a possible trade should be explored as Tippet is still on big money until the end of 2020. Several clubs are also sure to ask about defender Aliir Aliir but Sydney are adamant he is "absolutely required" as they try to transition him into taking over from Heath Grundy.

WEST COAST
Picks: 13, 30, 48, 67, 85,

The management of former All-Australian Gaff say he is looking forward to spending more time in the midfield now that Brownlow medallists Sam Mitchell and Matthew Priddis have retired. But there is speculation he is open to returning home to Melbourne ahead of his contract expiring after the 2018 season, when he will be a free agent. If the Eagles feel he won't re-sign next year, look for a deal to be done. The Eagles have also been linked to Fasolo, who is contracted until the end of 2018, but that has cooled.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Picks: 9, 26, 39, 67, 85

The Bulldogs have already secured Port Adelaide's Jackson Trengove through free agency, while Fremantle utility Hayden Crozier is also firmly on their radar. They have grown tired of Jake Stringer's poor form and troubles off the field but insist he could yet return if the right deal is not offered. The Dogs also insist Tom Liberatore will not be traded, while Luke Dahlhaus' manager Peter Lenton says his client will complete his contract which expires after the 2018 campaign. The retirements of Bob Murphy and Matthew Boyd have helped to clear salary-cap space.
