On Monday afternoon, Brisbane City Council public and active transport chairman Adrian Schrinner announced the New Farm Park Ferry Terminal would be upgraded to improve accessibility and boost capacity.

The new terminal would have a larger dual-berth terminal and a new gangway and pontoon to make boarding more accessible.

"This terminal is one of the most popular outside the CBD itself. Around 200,000 people a year use the terminal and 1300 dockings per week," Cr Schrinner said.

"At the moment we're out to tender, so there are two tenderers shortlisted and we will make a decision soon on the successful tenderer.

The terminal upgrade is part of a $52 million council investment to deliver transport along the Brisbane River.

Cr Schrinner said the cost of the new terminal and the closure period would depend on the successful tenderer, but the upgrade would cost between $8 and $10 million and the terminal would be likely closed for between four and five months.

"There will be a closure period that will be essential to actually do the upgrade but that will be minimised and also scheduled around the Commonwealth Games," he said.

During this closure residents wanting to catch a CityCat will have to walk the 1.2 kilometres from the closed terminal to Sydney Street or 2.5 kilometres to the Teneriffe terminal.

The cross-river ferry running between Norman Park and New Farm Park will divert to Sydney Street during the terminal closure.

This is the first upgrade to the terminal since 2001, when it was upgraded to be able to berth CityCats.

The terminal opened in 1996 and only serviced the cross-river ferry at the time.

The New Farm Park ferry terminal upgrade is anticipated to start mid-2018.

The terminal upgrade includes:

• Dismantling and removing the existing pontoon and gangway
• Constructing a new gangway and new flood-resilient, dual-berthing pontoon
• Refurbishing the existing passenger waiting area
• Installing new terminal identification signage
• Improved lighting and safety features
