While Oliver - who turned 20 in July - is not the Dees' youngest best and fairest (Terry Leahy at 19 years and 354 days in 1966 still holds that record), the win continues a remarkable rise for Oliver, who was the bolter in the 2015 draft where he was taken at pick four.

Oliver won the award by a colossal 184 votes, polling 530, with co-captain Jack Viney second on 346. Oliver played 13 games in his debut season last year and was a dominant force in 2017, even though he occasionally courted controversy, including allegations of staging in an incident involving West Coast's Will Schofield, after which he became involved in a Twitter war of words with former Test cricketer Damien Martyn. He was also involved in a boundary line run-in with a Carlton fan for which the Demons subsequently apologised.

Oliver played every game for the Demons in 2017, averaging just under 30 disposals per match. He polled 12 votes in the Brownlow medal, and was named the AFL Coaches' Association's best young player.

Fellow midfielder Viney - who was named Dees' best and fairest for the first time last year - was runner-up despite missing four games in 2017.

The Demons' other co-captain Nathan Jones, himself a three-time winner of the award, finished equal third on 327 votes with veteran Jordan Lewis, who had a strong first season after moving from Hawthorn. Jones' finish was his sixth top-three result in the award, while Lewis has now placed in the top-three of a club best and fairest count on three occasions, having won the Peter Crimmins Medal at the Hawks in 2014, and been runner-up last year.

Backman Neville Jetta was fifth after an impressive campaign, while forward Jack Watts - poised to leave the club in the trade period - finished 21st.
