“It was a lot easier because there were not as many riders,” Philip Woodward said. He competed in the 13-14 years boys cruiser and came eighth in the final.
His younger brother Bill won the 11 year boys division and also received a R.I.D.E award (Respect, Integrity, Dedication, Enjoyment). “BMX Qld thought I had all of them,” Bill said.
“I like riding my bike making friends.”
His definition of ‘respect’ in the sport of BMX was “I guess you respect your peers and officials that run the race, and fellow riders.”
The boys had competed in the world championships in Rock Hill, Carolina, in July, after much fundraising from the Mount Isa community. They competed against a range of countries include America, South Africa, Japan, France, and Belgium. Bill came fifth in the cruisers and in the top 64 for 20 inch.
Philip made it into the top 64 in the cruiser.
