Police will allege the 35-year-old Los Angeles man arrived in Brisbane on a flight from his home city on Thursday and was stopped for further examination by Australian Border Force officers.

After an interview and examination, the man was allegedly found to be carrying pellets internally. He was taken to hospital by Australian Federal Police officers where he was allegedly found to have eight methamphetamine pellets inside him, which were later removed.

Curtin University drug and alcohol expert Professor Steve Allsop said if the alleged offences were proven to be true, the man took a great risk to his personal safety.

"If people ingest significant amounts of drugs they can, and sometimes do, burst - which can result in catastrophic consequences," he said.

"A burst means there is no control of the amount of the drug in your system and can easily lead to an overdose.

"Methamphetamine causes rapid and irregular heartbeat which can lead to a heart attack, stroke, the increased risk of volatile behaviour and loss of body temperature control."

The accused appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday on drug possession and importation charges, where he had his bail refused and was remanded in custody to reappear on the following Friday.

The maximum penalties for these offences are 25 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $550,000.
