Falls in excess of 30 millimetres were recorded in greater Brisbane on Sunday with Oxley receiving 32, Chandler picked up 21 and inner Brisbane saw 10-15 millimetres since 9am.

Heavy rainfall saw Poona Dam and Wappa Dam in the Sunshine Coast hinterland overflow, while nine other dams had risen above 85 per cent capacity.

The wet weather also generated dangerous surf conditions, which forced the closure of beaches on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and North Stradbroke Island on Sunday.

The shark nets at Rainbow Beach, Mooloolaba, Wurtulla and Caloundra were also removed over the weekend due to the rough conditions and were not expected to be returned to the water until Wednesday.

BoM meteorologist Andrew Bufalino said the rain started to increase during Sunday afternoon as the troughs combined, with heavier showers expected to roll through towards the evening. Brisbane was expecting 30-70 millimetres to fall by the end of the day.

The rain was forecast to continue into Sunday evening and overnight, easing to showers on Monday, before the wet weather moved north over the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay regions.

Parts of south-east Queensland recorded falls of more than 150 millimetres during the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday, after mini-tornadoes were pictured in the Darling Downs region.

Delaneys Creek in the Moreton Bay region recorded 169 millimetres, Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast received 119 millimetres and Brisbane only saw 29 millimetres fall.

Mr Bufalino said there had been sightings of landspouts in the Darling Downs on Saturday, which are described as "weaker tornadoes" created when rain and strong winds combine near the surface.

Brisbane was forecast to see 20-50 millimetres of rain on Monday and showers were expected to bring falls of 20 millimetres or less on Tuesday and Wednesday.
