The brothers, who established their own syndication firm Triple Crown more than a decade ago, on Saturday celebrated their most important day at the races by winning the nation's richest ever horse race.

But it was a day with a difference. It was a day of high emotion, with people of all walks of life descending on Royal Randwick to see the "Everest".

Unlike in the past when owning a horse was largely reserved for High Court judges, chief executives of international firms and captains of industry, that social order was replaced on Saturday with all Australians eager to be part of a special day.

No, Sydney racing changed the rich and famous philosophy on Saturday. There was no distinction between blue and white collar workers or those who chose to drink in the front bar.

A Sydney GP sat and chattered on how exciting it was with a local taxi driver and concreter who all had roughly the same holdings in Redzel.

Racing came back to the people. The 17 lucky part-owners of Redzel hugged and embraced long after the trophy celebrations had been made.

In fact, Michael Ward said: "I think the 33,000 people that were spilling out of the stands were just so much behind us. They were sharing a magical moment.

"Syndication can be a tough life. But to see these small groups of people that included 10 members of the NSW police force, a concreter, doctor, taxi driver, even an ex-NSW cricket coach."

Purchased for just $120,000, Redzel saw the massive crowd at Randwick stand and cheer from when the barriers opened.

When the field turned for home, the noise and heaving from the huge crowd became deafening.

People of the harbour city were embracing a special day.

"It was a noise only reserved for the Melbourne Cup. Randwick came alive and the occasion even transcended racing. It was a huge event that Sydney have been looking for and have now found," Ward said.

"It was a shot in the arm to our industry and I'm so glad it was brought to Randwick on Saturday."

It is another success for Peter V'landys, senior executive and the architect of the Everest who rolled the dice on staging such an event. He is now the talk of Australian sport.

For the owners of Redzel, the party went long into the night at the Star City Casino.

The race was rerun 100 times. Wealthy owners embraced battlers who had found enough money to be a part of the Triple Crown syndicate. They laughed and shared jokes and with 10 NSW police officers enjoying the victory, the trophy was in good hands.

"This racing experience is a lot more than just dollars and cents. We have a group of people from all over Australia, from different backgrounds who have all come together to watch one race. They will walk away with some money and unforgettable memories of an amazing day," Ward said.

However, one suspects that some friendships that weren't dependent on whether you worked from a boardroom, a surgery or drive a taxi were made on Saturday and will last long after the day 17 people conquered the Everest.
