Master trainer Murray Baker can find no reason why Caulfield Cup favourite Bonneval should not take her place in Saturday's $3.1 million 2400-metre test after she trotted up sound on Sunday.

There were concerns about the Australian Oaks winner after she was beaten more than four lengths into sixth as favourite in the Caulfield Stakes and found to be lame in her nearside foreleg, as well as suffering a laceration to her offside hind.

Baker was somewhat amused by the concerns about Bonneval on Sunday morning.

He is confident the Makfli mare will be at her best when she drops to 52.5 kilograms in the handicap on Saturday as he looks for another Caulfield Cup to sit aside Mongolian Khan's from a couple of years ago.

"We trotted her up on hard surface and she was fine," Murray said. "It is hard to know what to make of that race on Saturday because nothing really went her way.

"It was probably not run to suit her and she obviously pulled up poorly, but the vets were happy with her this morning."

Bonneval had always been near the top of Caulfield Cup betting and was made favourite after winning the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and Underwood Stakes but she was a little flat on Saturday and drifted out to $6.50 at Sportsbet.

"I think she is going to be better over the 2400 metres and with more pressure in the race because she is just a very good stayer," he said. "It is the race we have had our eyes on from the start of the preparation."

Baker was more pleased with the effort of Australian Derby winner Jon Snow, which was third in the Caulfield Stakes despite a wide run after winning the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley.

"He is going along really well and I heard there could be a bit of rain, which would really help him. He is also going to better at the 2400 metres," Baker said. "I'm hoping the forecast is right because it will help on Jon Snow and Bonneval."

Baker is hoping to have a third Caulfield Cup runner in Lizzie L'Amour, but she would be in doubt after failing in Sunday's Cranbourne Cup.

Kerrin McEvoy is booked to ride Bonneval, which is $6.50 equal Caulfield Cup favourite with Humidor, while Stephen Baster will stick with Jon Snow, a $13 chance, and Corey Brown is on standby for Lizzie L'Amour.

The Caulfield Stakes did provide the biggest market mover for the Caulfield Cup after Aidan O'Brien-trained Johannes Vermeer was a gutsy runner-up to Gailo Chop, impressing jockey Katelyn Mallyon.

"He really launched late and is a really good chance next week in Caulfield Cup," she said.

Johannes Vermeer is $7 chance alongside Bart Cummings winner Amelie's Star, which is certain to gain a start despite being 23rd on the order of entry.

The O'Brien-trained stayer has good history of winning on the quick back-up and will be one of a couple runners for Lloyd Williams who is also going to run Sir Isaac Newton.

Melbourne Cup winner Almandin is unlikely to take his place in the Caulfield Cup, while Godolphin ruled Hartnell out after he failed to fire in the Caulfield Stakes.

Chad Schofield will fly in from Hong Kong after a winning treble on Saturday to ride Lindsay Park's leading contender Harlem, which earned his place in the race by winning the Naturalism Stakes.

Australian Bloodstock's Jamie Lovett is extremely confident Japanese stayer Admire Deus will make his presence felt in the Caulfield Cup.

"He might not have won a couple of years over there but he has been racing in top company and he has settled in as well as any horse we have brought over here," Lovett said. "Craig Williams has been delighted with his work and he is ready to run a strong 2400 metres."

Meanwhile, Godolphin's Newmarket trainer Charlie Appleby reignited his love of Victoria country cups as Folkswood took out the Cranbourne Cup on Sunday.
