In the form and good fortune that leading racehorse syndicator Terry Henderson is in, don't rule the prospect of OTI's yellow and blue hoops coming to the fore in the Caulfield Cup on the back of an import who hardly anyone had heard of until last weekend.

Lord Fandango burst into cup calculations with his win in the group 2 Herbert Power Stakes at The Heath last Saturday, a victory that earned him a guaranteed spot in the big race field.

Henderson said on Monday that the German-bred horse (he is by the very useful 2000-metre horse Lord of England) had pulled up well after his triumph over English import Wall of Fire and that the cup would be his next target.

"He pulled up really well. Benny Allen [who copped a suspension as a result of the win] will ride him so he's got six days to relax and get fit and ready to ride him at 50 kilograms. He's got a light weight and he will stay, so it's worth a go.

"It's hard to say if he's good enough, but he has continued to improve and excel on firmer tracks and he is getting better as he goes up in distance.

"It was a tough race - Ben rode him as if it was a Caulfield Cup, he took off early and sustained the run and it was pleasing to see that he was able to do that."

The lightly raced galloper gave young English trainer Archie Alexander the biggest success of his short career since setting up in Australia.

But the Ballarat-based horseman has already shown he has a knack of developing stayers; his filly Wheal Leisure won the $250,000 Inglis Cup at the previous Caulfield meeting over 2000 metres, having been good enough to run fifth in the ATC Oaks as a three-year-old against the best fillies of her generation.

"Lord Fandango is bred to be a staying type and of course Archie has really shown his skills with these sort of horses. He's had terrific experience overseas developing his ability and he has got more than a dozen of our horses now. We have horses with Darren Weir, I will be sending some more to Chris Waller, but Archie will be getting his share of the good ones going forward," Henderson said.

Henderson and OTI enjoyed a huge day on Saturday, winning two group 1 races - the Thousand Guineas with Aloisia and the Caulfield Stakes with former French galloper Gailo Chop - and he admitted it was almost the best day of his long racing career.

"It was right up there. I spoke to Darren Weir [who trains Gailo Chop and also won another group 1 with Tosen Stardom] and we both said it was our best day apart from when we won the Melbourne Cup. That is the ultimate race day in Australia."

Henderson was part of the ownership group who had 1996 Melbourne Cup winner Doriemus, while Weir took the great race with 100-1 outsider Prince Of Penzance, ridden into history by the first woman to win the race, Michelle Payne.

It could be an enormous spring for Henderson and his group given the strong hand they hold in the major group 1 races to come.

Henderson acknowledges that it's probably a fruitless challenge, but Gailo Chop, who earlier in his career won the group 1 Mackinnon Stakes, will back up in the Cox Plate to try to take on Winx.

In a surprise initiative he revealed that Gailo Chop could, if he comes through the plate well, try his luck over 3200 metres in the Melbourne Cup 10 days later.

OTI's Thousand Guineas winner Aloisia will now be targeted at the VRC Oaks after giving stand-in trainer Aaron Purcell (who is holding the fort for the suspended Ciaron Maher) his first group 1 race win.

Henderson said the filly had looked slightly underdone right up until a few days before the race.

"The feeling was that she might be a little bit short leading up to the Guineas, but she did work very well on the Tuesday before.

"We were not overconfident, we thought she might be half a run short but she's a great-winded filly and when she got back to the fence and fought back against Anthony Freedman's filly [Shoals] I knew that she would be hard to beat.

"Had she been second or third we would have been happy, so to win was a real bonus."

And the group might even have a lively Victoria Derby contender in the shape of the New Zealand-trained Vin De Dance, who will make his Australian debut on Wednesday in a benchmark 70 race for three-year-olds at Caulfield.

"He's by Roc de Cambes [who stands at stud in NZ]. I bought him at the ready to run sales there last year and asked [leading NZ trainer] Murray Baker to have a look at him for me, he said yes, he's all right, so we bought him.

"The tracks have been very soft in New Zealand over the winter but he won his maiden at Pukekohe in September, then stepped up to 1400 metres and ran second and was then second to the older horses last time.

"We will see how he goes on Wednesday, and if he runs well we can press on to the Geelong Derby trial and then hopefully to the VRC Derby."
