From youngsters to some of Australia’s most accomplished legends, the Queen’s Baton Relay recognises the achievements and aspirations of Australians from all walks of life and the Baton arrives in Mount Isa on March 6, 2018.
Among the batonbearers representing Mount Isa will be 11-year-old Mace Te Pohe and 2017 Mount Isa Australia of the Year, Gavin Donnelly.
Mace is an Aboriginal leader in Grade 6 at Central State School organising the school’s Naidoc events as well as a range of other community and fundraising events. He is known as an animal whisperer and would love to be a wildlife ranger.
Gavin is recognised for his many volunteer roles with the SES, Rural Fire Brigade and Saint Johns Ambulance.

Mount Isa Mayor Cr Joyce McCulloch said she was immensely proud of our batonbearers. “Many have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of others, some have accomplished great feats and others are working towards realising their dreams. Being a batonbearer recognises all of this, and more,” Cr McCulloch said. “I encourage you to support these great people in our community, and to share a memorable moment with the Queen’s Baton yourselves.”
Across the country, batonbearers will take more than a million steps to bring the Baton to the Games’ Opening Ceremony on April 4. Community celebration details will be announced on November 17.
