The wet weather was sitting over central Queensland on Monday night, with a severe weather warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for coastal areas in parts of the Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett regions.

A month's worth of rain fell in the south-east over the weekend, but the impressive rainfall figures did not translate to increased dam levels.

Seqwater external relations manager Mike Foster said the fact that Poona and Wappa Dam in the Sunshine Coast hinterland were spilling was not an accurate indicator of dam levels, as they were both "relatively small" compared to Wivenhoe and Somerset.

Mr Foster said the majority of the rainfall had been "sucked up by the soil" in the catchment areas and there had only been a "small inflow" to dams.

South-east Queensland dam levels rose to 71.7 per cent on Monday and Mr Foster said the weekend rain meant catchments were now "primed".

"We saw enough rain to wet the catchments and ensure extra water in the coming days will run off into our storages," he said.

"The next 24 hours will determine how much of a boost we see to the drinking water supply."

In September, Mr Foster said south-east Queensland's dam levels were likely to drop below 70 per cent for the first time since 2013, unless the region received significant rainfall.

BoM senior forecaster Jonty Hall said since 9am on Monday, Captain Creek, north of Bundaberg, recorded 153 millimetres and nearby Westwood Range received 117.

Elsewhere, Ball Lookout on the northern Sunshine Coast saw 111 millimetres and nearby Cooroy recorded 103.

Looking ahead, the intensifying upper trough was expected to move north and intensify, leading to heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms between the Town of 1770 and Noosa Heads.

Rainfall totals between 120 and 180 millimetres over six hours and wind gusts up to 90km/h were forecast overnight and into Tuesday.

The State Emergency Service was kept busy over the weekend and preparations were being made around Bundaberg for flash flooding and a small community nearby to be cut off.

Between Friday evening and Monday afternoon, the SES completed 47 jobs in Brisbane and 56 in the south-east region from Logan to the Gold Coast.

However, the busiest region was the north coast sector from Beerwah to Bundaberg with 128 calls for help over the three days.

While the majority of those jobs were tarping and sandbagging, crews around Bundaberg were preparing for the small community of Woodgate to be cut-off by floodwaters.

Bundaberg SES controller Kieran Galley said crews were preparing in Bundaberg, Woodgate, Elliott Heads, Welcome Creek and Meadowvale with 40 reinforcements on standby if needed.

SES crews in Woodgate were stockpiling sandbags and extra supplies were being brought in ahead of more rain.

BoM forecaster Harry Clark said the wet weather was unusual for this time of year.

"Most places in south-east Queensland have already reached the average rainfall for October," he said.

"It's usually quite a dry month for us, so this is a little unusual."

Beaches remained closed on the Sunshine Coast on Monday, after closures on both coasts at the weekend.

Mr Clark said the combination of two weather systems was driving the wet weather, as a high-pressure system off the Victorian coast brought in a lot of moisture before combining with a strong upper low in south-west Queensland to dump it closer to the coast.

"Generally as we go in towards the end of the week it's going to dry out a bit," he said.

"We still do have the chance of a shower on Friday and for the weekend as well so it's not completely dry at this stage but looking a lot less cloudy and miserable."
