On Saturday the Zonta Club of Mount Isa had a morning tea at Mount Isa Motorcycles but there was a surprise addition to the agenda with a presentation to the North West Breast Cancer Support Group who were invited to attend, but who had no idea what was about to happen.
Zonta Club of Mount Isa president Lyn White said they were presenting the Breast Cancer Group with their own marquee, worth about $3000.
The spacious pink marquee is bright and unmissable and it is branded with the Breast Cancer Group logo and says it is from the Zonta Club of Mount Isa.
Ms White said the idea for the donation came about from conversation between Zonta vice president Joy Strain and Trish Olsen, the president of the North West Breast Cancer Group.
Ms Strain the conversation occurred on the day Zonta acquired its own new marquee.
“She just went, oh wow how nice it is, we could never afford to buy one of these,” Ms Strain said. “And they are always out and about in sun so we thought it would be good to do something to give back to the ladies who have breast cancer.”
Ms Strain said that Zonta Club of Mount Isa made the decision to help them out.
They invited Trish and other members of the Breast Cancer Group to morning tea on Saturday where they made the surprise announcement.
“This morning we are going to give the breast cancer group their very own marquee,” Ms Strain announced to the applause of everyone present.
A stunned Ms Olsen struggled with her emotions as she thanked the Zonta ladies for their donation.
“This means so much to us, we are so excited,” Ms Olsen said.
“Everyone is now going to know who we are, this will really help get the message out.”
The ladies watched as those present assembled the marquee.
“We often don’t have a lot of help, but this will be so easy to set up at all our outdoor events,” they said.
“This will help us stay out of the sun.”
