A Moonee Valley gallop on your own, far from the prying eyes of most of the media?

No problem, madam.

The course all to yourself while you stride out and flex those muscles?

But, of course.

Makybe may have been the Diva, of her day, her three Melbourne Cups the stuff of legend.

But Winx is very much the Princess of Prime Time now, and what racing's superstar wants - or at least her trainer, Chris Waller, desires - she usually gets. Waller wanted a closed gallop for the Queen of the Turf at Moonee Valley and that's what he got on Tuesday morning, arriving in the breaking light of dawn to strut her stuff in a solo performance.

After all, she's earned the right to special treatment. Not since the marvel that was Black Caviar retired has there been a racehorse like Winx, and, in an age where her appearance adds thousands to the gate and piques interest well beyond the sports section, she will inevitably be cut some slack.

So it was that the winner of her past 21 races, accompanied by Waller and big-race rider Hughie Bowman, returned to the scene of her greatest triumphs, to reacquaint herself with the venue with which she is becoming synonymous.

She will attempt to equal the feat of the legendary Kingston Town on Saturday week when she looks to win her third Cox Plate, so getting a feel for the course and distance she handles so well only made sense.

"We asked her to do a normal maintenance gallop, it's three weeks between runs and she is very fit," Waller said afterwards.

The champion conducted "slightly stronger work ... over 1200 metres steadily building to do a quicker last 400 metres", he said. It's all designed "to keep her content ahead of the Cox Plate".

"She will do a bit more work again at the end of the week and one short, sharp gallop next week, then back off the work three or four days leading into the Cox Plate."

Winx showed she was at her imperious best with a dominating win in the group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on October 7, dealing contemptuously with two fancied Caulfield Cup runners, Ventura Storm and Humidor.

Waller said she had recovered in exceptional style and had the Cox Plate been last weekend she would have been good to go, so well was she feeling.

"It was a good performance and seeing her recover well is good. From a longevity perspective that's what we are looking at now. She comes first, so making sure that she is right after each race is just as important to making sure she is right going into each race. I couldn't be any happier with her.

"Bringing her here to Moonee Valley, where she is so comfortable around this track and she enjoys being here, it just seemed logical. She will probably come back for the Breakfast with the Stars on Tuesday.

"She is a horse that feels the hype and adrenalin on race day, so simulating that in a morning like the Breakfast with the Stars or even this morning, is all good for race day. They get here race day and it's just like another track gallop."

Her jockey, Bowman, was delighted with the way she went.

"It's the first time since last year's victory since she's been back here. She was happy to be back and enjoyed the workout and so did I.

"There's no doubt she certainly enjoys the surface, the Strathayr is a little bit more cushioned than the other tracks."

Bowman believes that it is Winx's athleticism that makes her so hard to beat at the Valley, a tight circuit that can prove tricky for some horses who like a more galloping venue.

"She is very good on her feet and she likes to go through her gears on the corner, particularly going this [Melbourne] way, so that might have something to do with it as well."

Waller and Bowman are not getting too bothered about the debate about the size or composition of the field she will face in her historic bid.

"I won't get too carried away with tactics until I see the field and barriers ... it does look as though there won't be as many runners this year as in the last couple of years but I won't really consider it until I see ... who knows," said Bowman.
