A Queensland grandmother has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly slashing her baby grandson in the face with a large knife, leaving him fighting for life.

The four-month-old baby was rushed to hospital after his mother woke up to his cries just after 6.30am at his grandmother's home in The Gap.
He was still undergoing surgery at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Police alleged the boy's mother walked into his room and found the 64-year-old woman "in possession" of a large knife, like a meat cleaver, commonly used to cut Asian vegetables.
Regional Duty Officer Inspector Daniel Bragg said the baby suffered "several slash marks" to the face.
He was rushed to the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in a critical condition, along with his "clearly distraught" mother.
Inspector Bragg described the incident as the "worst-case scenario", saying paramedics and officers were "visibly affected" by the scene.
"We're used to going to trauma but it's always probably the most affecting job you can go to, one involving a child," he said.
Forensic officers remained at crime scene throughout the day, sifting through bins and collecting other evidence.
One neighbour said she was shocked to hear the accusations levelled against a woman she had thought was a "nice lady".
"I don't know her very well but it doesn't seem like, it's very uncharacteristic - well - completely uncharacteristic," she said.
The woman is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
